It's been a while since a Shakespeare adaptation conquered the box office — but this chilling first glimpse at the latest version of Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, may have enough punch to get more than theater buffs into the seats:

Director Justin Kurzel's adaptation looks to be fairly faithful to the Shakespeare play, retaining the basic setting and text while packing in the massive, luxurious sets and horrific battle scenes that wouldn't be possible on your average stage. At the very least, it's hard to think of modern actors better suited to play Macbeth and Lady Macbeth than Fassbender and Cotillard.

Macbeth hits theaters in the U.K. in October. A formal U.S. release date has not yet been announced.
