99-year-old woman becomes a college graduate

Doreetha Daniels is the oldest student in her graduating class — by several decades. In fact, at 99 years young, Daniels is the oldest student ever to graduate from College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, California.
Daniels' journey towards a college degree, which began in the spring of 2009, was full of obstacles. Despite suffering multiple strokes, combating sight and hearing issues, and having her driver's licensed revoked, Daniels continued to complete coursework for classes including college-level math and statistics, and has become a familiar face in the Tutoring & Learning Center.
Daniels described receiving her degree as the most gratifying moment of her life. According to a COC press release, Daniels said she wanted to finish her education to better herself.

"Doreetha is a living testament to the saying, 'If there is a will, there is a way,'" COC counseling faculty member Liz Shaker said in a press release. "Her desire to get out of bed each day and come to school and face the challenges in and outside of the classroom inspired us all."
