The musical from Smash is being developed for the stage

Fans of the canceled Broadway-themed series Smash have something to celebrate: Bombshell, the musical from the show, is being developed as an actual stage production.

NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt and Universal Pictures president Jimmy Horowitz, co-heads of Universal Stage Productions, decided it was time to make Bombshell a reality after seeing how excited fans were during a benefit presentation of the play in New York, Variety reports. A musical bio of Marilyn Monroe, Bombshell’s songs were written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman of Hairspray fame.

Although there is some music to work with, there isn't a book yet (during the benefit production, the actors just recited text from letters by Monroe), a director needs to be selected, and there's no word on whether Smash stars Katharine McPhee, Megan Hilty, or Christian Borle will participate (they all took part in the benefit production). One big name that is attached is the executive producer of the TV show, Steven Spielberg, who will be involved somehow in the stage version.
