Planning to move to Jackson, Mississippi? Do it now before rent gets higher.

New Yorkers can't complain about climbing rent prices anymore; the metro areas of Jackson, Mississippi and Portland, Maine have stolen that claim to fame. The average monthly rent in Jackson is now $1,169, an enormous 22.7 percent increase from last year, real estate data firm Zillow found. Portland is not far behind, with an increase of 17.4 percent. Rental prices fell slightly in Chicago, New Orleans, and Milwaukee — cities that have a surplus of rental units up for grabs.
