Richard Matt — the convicted murderer who escaped from New York's Clinton Correctional Facility, alongside fellow fugitive David Sweat, on June 6 — has been shot and killed by law enforcement officers, multiple sources have confirmed.

Matt was killed in a rural part of upstate New York, where investigators, at the tail end of a massive manhunt, had tracked the men using DNA evidence. The New York Times says that a second round of gunfire has also been reported, but that Sweat's fate is still unclear.
