North Korea warns of retaliatory nuclear strike on U.S. if attacked
North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho warned the United States in a statement Monday that Pyongyang "is ready to teach the U.S a severe lesson with its nuclear strategic force" if attacked, The Wall Street Journal reports. Ri added that other countries are safe from nuclear retaliation so long as they do not join the U.S. in an attack.
North Korea last month tested ballistic missiles capable of reaching mainland America, although Pyongyang's progress on miniaturizing a nuclear weapon to fit on such a missile isn't known. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has not ruled out pre-emptive strikes on North Korea and on Saturday, the United Nations voted 15-0 to impose new U.S.-drafted sanctions on the nation, with Pyongyang threatening "thousands-fold" revenge.
