Gloria Vanderbilt died Monday, her son Anderson Cooper announced on CNN. She was 95.
Vanderbilt was the only daughter of railroad magnate Reginald Vanderbilt, who died when she was young, making her the subject a famous custody battle between her mother and aunt. Her first marriage, which Cooper calls a "mistake from the get-go" in his video tribute, was at 17 to a man she later alleged was abusive. She then married conductor Leopold Stokowski, director Sidney Lumet, and eventually Wyatt Cooper, the CNN anchor's father.
Throughout it all, Vanderbilt acted in TV shows, modeled around the world, and worked as a fashion designer. She later became an artist, and also wrote several books, including one with Cooper. Cooper's eight-minute video tribute includes footage from the HBO documentary Nothing Left Unsaid, and includes candid conversations between the CNN anchor and his mother.
