John Edwards’ bad week

Why his affair with Rielle Hunter continues to reverberate

“How miserable is it to be John Edwards right now?” asked Jason Zengerle in The New Republic. A book by his cancer-stricken wife, Elizabeth Edwards, is about to come out—revealing, among other things, that the she threw up when she learned about his affair with his campaign videographer, Rielle Hunter. And now federal investigators are looking into whether the former Democratic presidential hopeful used campaign funds to pay his mistress to keep quiet.

The mainstream media “is sick,” said Mickey Kaus in Slate. "John Edwards runs an entire presidential campaign based in large part on his character"—while cheating on his wife—"and the press doesn't care." And now that he no longer matters it's suddenly a big deal that "some prosecutor comes up with a tedious, hard-to-define potential campaign violation." Pathetic.
