Good day, Bad day
Killing the competition, Winter jobs
GOOD DAY FOR: Killing the competition, after the new James Bond movie, “Quantum of Solace,” earned a better-than-expected $70.4 million in its U.S. opening weekend, easily beating “Madagascar” and “Role Models.” In all, films brought in $143 million in the U.S. this weekend. “People are finding solace at the movies literally and figuratively,” said Paul Dergarabedian of Media by Numbers. “Quantum of Solace” has earned $322 million worldwide since its overseas debut Oct. 31. BAD DAY FOR: Winter jobs, as retailers are cutting back on hiring temporary help this holiday season, while the pool of applicants for those jobs is ballooning. The number of seasonal job openings was down 24 percent at the end of September, versus a year earlier, and those numbers are expected to deteriorate further as retailers cope with falling sales and rising store closures.
