Good Day, Bad Day

No. 64,999, golden-years fears

GOOD DAY FOR: No. 64,999, as U.S. immigration officials said they had stopped accepting applications for next year’s 65,000 H-1B work visa slots, reserved for highly skilled foreign workers, after just one week. The visa winners will be picked by lottery. Applications are expected to far exceed the open slots. Computer and tech companies have called for issuing more H-1B visas. (Reuters)

BAD DAY FOR: Golden-years fears, after a new survey found that only 18 percent of workers polled were very confident about having enough money for a comfortable retirement, down from 27 percent last year. “If there is a silver lining, it’s that Americans finally may be waking up to the realities of being able to afford retirement,” said Dallas Salisbury of the Employee Benefit Research Institute, which conducted the survey.
