Good Day, Bad Day

Keeping connected, old media

GOOD DAY FOR: Keeping connected, as voice-over-Internet firm Skype and social-networking site MySpace announced a deal that will add free Skype calling to MySpace’s messaging application. Starting in November, MySpace users will be able to call a member in their network with a single click, even if the member is offline. (AP in BusinessWeek.com)

BAD DAY FOR: Old media, as Scripps announced plans to split its booming cable TV and Internet units from its newspaper holdings. Cable channels HGTV and the Food Network will anchor the new Scripps Networks Interactive company. The E.W. Scripps Company will keep the 19 newspapers and other traditional media holdings.
