More than 800 South Carolina teachers received a major gift from Stephen Colbert
Stephen Colbert made more than 800 educators very happy on Thursday, when he announced he would fund every single grant request made by South Carolina public school teachers on the crowdfunding website DonorsChoose.org.
Colbert made a surprise visit to Alexander Elementary School in Greenville, South Carolina, on Thursday to make the big announcement. By covering every request on the website, Colbert will fund almost 1,000 projects for over 800 teachers at more than 375 schools for a grand total of $800,000, Greenville Online reports. Teachers asked for everything from funding to purchase new books and classroom supplies to assistance paying for professional development opportunities.
At the event, Colbert shared that he’s using proceeds of the sale from the old Colbert Report set, as well as matching funds from The Morgridge Family Foundation and ScanSource, to make the grants happen. "Enjoy your learning, South Carolina," he said.
