1. Senate narrowly defeats Republican bid to dismiss Trump impeachment

The Senate on Tuesday narrowly voted down a Republican proposal to dismiss the House's new impeachment trial against former President Donald Trump as unconstitutional. The 55-45 vote cleared the way for Trump's second impeachment trial to begin in February, but with the support of only five Republicans. Democrats need to convince 17 Republicans to cross party lines to muster the 67 votes necessary to convict Trump of the charge that he incited the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection by his supporters who attacked the U.S. Capitol. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who voted for dismissing the trial, reportedly believes Trump provoked the mob behind the deadly Capitol attack, but has not decided whether to vote to convict.
