The magic lantern: Celebrating the Armani Logo Lamp

Created in 1982, the light was Armani's first foray into interior design; today, it's being honoured through a stylish photo series

"I have always been interested in extending my design aesthetic from clothing into other areas," says Giorgio Armani. "My first piece of interior design was the Logo Lamp, which I created in 1982, but Armani/Casa was launched properly in 2000 in Milan. My objective was to bring my philosophy of style to the world of home interiors and, in doing so, to create the complete concept of an 'Armani lifestyle.'"

Conceived the same year the designer graced the cover of Time magazine, the Logo Lamp was a simple table-light created to illuminate Armani's offices in Via Durini, Milan. When, nearly two decades later, the home collection was launched, the lamp became the first product of the new venture, as well as the graphic element of the Armani/Casa logo – a symbol of elegance and minimalism characteristic of Armani's style.

This season, to celebrate the Logo Lamp and its continued presence in the Armani/Casa collection, the light has been captured in situ on desks in the personal spaces of a selection of leading architects. Vincenzo De Cotiis, John Pawson, Tadao Ando and David Collins and writer, editor and creative director Nick Vinson all allowed photographer Beppe Brancato to shoot the Logo Lamp "at home".

Some 16 years after its launch - and 34 years after its first appearance of the first Logo Lamp - Armani/Casa boasts a complete lifestyle collection that ranges from furniture, lighting and interior decoration to kitchens, bathroom furniture, wall coverings, textiles, rugs and accessories. It also has a dedicated Interior Design Studio for individuals and property developers that can follow a project from the conceptual stage through to the management of construction.

Reflecting on the transformation from his first foray into interior design with the humble Logo Lamp to the comprehensive interiors business he has today, Armani says: "I've presented my ideal for living, my dream of the perfect environment: an intimate and sophisticated space in which to relax, unwind and entertain guests, surrounded by beauty manifested through furniture and objects for the home."
