Off Grid Hideaways' handpicked remote retreats offer complete seclusion and the chance to escape from a fast-paced world
In today's constantly on-the-go society it's harder than ever to shut off and log out, and even the best intentions for a relaxed holiday can quickly be derailed by modern technology. But what if you could go to a place that was truly remote, that allowed you to connect with nature unfettered by the distractions of day-to-day life? This is something the two founders of new travel company Off Grid Hideaways, Flavia Kampf Spahr and Sina Murphy Chan, have sought to make all the more easier.
They have drawn on their own travel adventures to handpick properties around the globe that combine great design and craftsmanship with stunning and secluded locations. And escaping from the hustle and bustle is just one part of the company's philosophy, with the destinations also embodying a more eco-friendly and sustainable way of living. Here, we take a look at some of the most idyllic spots on offer around the world.

The pace of life in this picturesque part of Portugal is slow at best, but for a slice of complete escapism, hole up in this cosy farmhouse set on 1,000 acres of private land. Owned by the same family for four generations, the property itself has been lovingly reworked into a tranquil space by Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus, with its clean white walls and minimalist interiors providing little distraction from the spectacular natural surrounds. The farm provides ample fresh produce for mealtimes, while electricity and water is sourced from the local network, renowned for its renewable energy.
This rural retreat in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains is the most energy-efficient building in Colorado; thanks to its innovative insulation no heating is required, whatever the climate, while much of its energy is derived from solar power. With no TV or phone reception and WiFi available only by request, there's little excuse not to make the most of the surrounding scenery, from wildlife spotting in Estes Park to kayaking and swimming from the shores of Horsetooth Reservoir.

This contemporary chalet provides the ideal rural retreat from which to take in the breathtakingly beautiful hiking trails around the Nevados de Chillan and its nearby ski resorts. Integrated into the surrounding landscape, the building is constructed from locally sourced wood and gives you unhindered views of the area's wildlife, without another soul in sight. Interior design touches have been thoughtfully put together to create a true home-from-home feel, including antique furniture gathered on the owner's own globetrotting travels.
If you're dreaming of a tranquil, tropical getaway, this former fisherman's house set in two acres of private land on Mawella's beachfront could be just the spot. The property, named Kotamba, takes its title from the kottamba tree in the garden, where you might spot some of the resident lizards, monkeys or fruit bats. It was brought back to life in the wake of the 2004 tsunami by owners Nicola and Ewan (an architect), who have created a pared-back and homely space featuring furniture built by local Tangalle tradespeople.
