On the domestic front, the prime minister also faced calls from scientists to “cancel Christmas”, but refused to axe his plan for a five-day relaxation of Covid rules to allow household mixing over the festive period.

While EU leaders are united in their bid to achieve a Brexit deal that benefits the bloc, divisions are emerging over delays in approving the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine. As the UK steams ahead with the mass rollout of the jab, a reportedly “heated” summit on Wednesday saw Europe’s chiefs agreeing to speed up their regulatory systems.
Meanwhile, the International Criminal Court ruled out an investigation into alleged genocide and crimes against humanity committed during China’s imprisonment of the country’s Uighur Muslim population.
One person who is facing further scrutiny, however, is Prince Andrew, amid new reports that the Royal delayed a family holiday in the Bahamas in 2001 to party on Jeffrey Epstein’s private island.
Back in the present day, Paris city authorities were unexpectedly jubilant after the French capital was slapped with a fine. The crime? Employing too many women in senior civil service positions.
