Charity of the week: National Hemophilia Foundation
The NHF is dedicated to raising awareness of hemophilia and to finding cures and better treatments.
The National Hemophilia Foundation (hemophilia.org) is dedicated to raising awareness of hemophilia and to finding cures and better treatments for bleeding and clotting disorders. Hemophilia is an inheritable disorder that prevents the blood from clotting normally, causing uncontrollable bleeding, often internally. It can be fatal and often results in health complications. Since 1948, the NHF has funded research leading to better diagnosis, improved protein-factor replacement therapies, and a deeper understanding of the genetic origins of the disorder and potential gene therapies. The foundation helped to establish a government relief fund to compensate the hemophiliacs who contracted HIV from clotting factor transfusions during the 1980s, before such products were properly screened.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
