Charity of the week: Save the Children
When disasters strike, STC works to meet the immediate and long-term needs of children and their families.
With 90 years of emergency-response experience, Save the Children (SaveTheChildren.org) has learned that children are always the most vulnerable victims of any crisis. When disasters strike—whether the 2011 Japanese tsunami; the Newtown, Conn., shooting tragedy; or last month’s tornado in Oklahoma—STC works to meet the immediate and long-term needs of children and their families. In addition to standard disaster aid, STC runs support programs and refers traumatized children to trained caseworkers for counseling. In Moore, Okla., where a massive tornado leveled two schools, STC set up child-friendly play spaces in evacuation shelters. It’s now working to reopen 12 child-care centers damaged by the storm so that parents can get back to work and restore normalcy for their kids.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
