The 2014 Jaguar F-Type: What the critics say
How did Jaguar's new sports car fare with the critics? The price starts $69,000.

Jaguar’s first new sports car since 1961’s E-Type proves to be “a worthy descendent” of that legendary roadster. “Gorgeous, comfortable, agile, and fast,” this “resolutely modern” soft-top affects no retro flourishes to flaunt its kinship with the Jaguar two-seater that’s often been labeled the most beautiful car ever built. It instead rests its claim on “sheer brilliance and spirit.”

Only a head-to-head track test will reveal how it stacks up against the Porsche 911, but even the base model “delivers more than enough thrills” for the average sports-car buyer. Once the car’s under way, “the slightest right-toe twitch delivers some serious thrust” and the taut suspension “keeps all paws planted” through hard turns. We wish a manual transmission were available immediately, but most drivers will find the eight-speed automatic “entirely satisfying.”
Automobile
Half of U.S. buyers are expected to opt for the 495-hp V-8 engine, rather than either V-6 option, and we can’t blame them. Extra oomph adds extra “personality and verve” to a roadster that already gets most everything right, from its “luxurious” but no-nonsense cabin to the top that tucks away neatly in just 12 seconds. Our guess? “This is the Jaguar that will finally pry some people out of their German cars.”
