Jaguar’s first new sports car since 1961’s E-Type proves to be “a worthy descendent” of that legendary roadster. “Gorgeous, comfortable, agile, and fast,” this “resolutely modern” soft-top affects no retro flourishes to flaunt its kinship with the Jaguar two-seater that’s often been labeled the most beautiful car ever built. Only a head-to-head track test will reveal how it stacks up against the Porsche 911, but even the base model “delivers more than enough thrills” for the average sports-car buyer. Half of U.S. buyers are expected to opt for the 495-hp V-8 engine, rather than either V-6 option, and we can’t blame them. Extra oomph adds extra “personality and verve” to a roadster that already gets most everything right, from its “luxurious” but no-nonsense cabin to the top that tucks away neatly in just 12 seconds. Our guess? “This is the Jaguar that will finally pry some people out of their German cars.”
