Ten years ago, crime novelist Michael Peterson was convicted of bludgeoning his wife to death in their North Carolina home. The case’s open questions attracted French director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, whose gripping 2004 miniseries The Staircase followed Peterson’s trial from opening remarks to the reading of his sentence: life without parole. But fraudulent testimony by a prosecution expert opened the chance of a retrial, and in this sobering new one-hour follow-up, Peterson finally learns if his prison ordeal is over.
