Beginning in the ’50s, Father Lawrence Murphy of Milwaukee molested as many as 200 boys who attended a school for the deaf that he eventually ran. In this powerful documentary, Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney uses the shocking details of various victims’ testimony to demonstrate how the cover-up of Murphy’s crimes reached all the way to the Vatican, tainting even the future Pope Benedict XVI. Chris Cooper, Ethan Hawke, and other actors give voice to Murphy’s victims, who use sign language to answer Gibney’s queries. Monday, Feb. 4, at 9 p.m., HBO
