Charity of the week: Sabin Vaccine Institute
The institute creates low-cost vaccines for neglected tropical diseases.
The Sabin Vaccine Institute (sabin.org) is dedicated to creating low-cost vaccines for neglected tropical diseases that plague the world’s 2 billion poorest people. Preventable and treatable diseases such as intestinal worm infections and onchocerciasis, or river blindness, affect hundreds of millions of people each year, causing malnutrition, severe physical disabilities, and even death. These diseases constitute more than a health crisis—they also trap people in poverty. Currently, SVI works in 18 countries and is developing new vaccines for four rampant parasitic infections, including human hookworm, which affects more than half a billion people, and schistosomiasis, a parasitic worm infection that kills 280,000 people each year.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
