Charity of the week: Tourette Syndrome Association

The Tourette Syndrome Association is the country’s only national nonprofit dedicated to finding a cure for Tourette syndrome.

The Tourette Syndrome Association (tsa-usa.org) is the country’s only national nonprofit dedicated to finding a cure for Tourette syndrome, the neurological disorder characterized by involuntary verbal and physical tics. Founded in 1972, the organization works with individuals struggling with TS and their families to help them find ways of coping with the disorder, and provides training and information to doctors and teachers to end the stigma associated with it. TSA also funds medical research to better understand and treat the sources and symptoms of the disorder. Since TS cases can vary from very mild to severe, many people with TS go undiagnosed. The National Institutes of Health estimates that 200,000 Americans have full-blown TS.

Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
