Show of the week: Copper
Tom Weston-Jones stars as a tough Irish “copper” in the promising debut of a new series.
This new drama has a superficial resemblance to Gangs of New York, thanks to its mid-19th-century New York setting, but it actually owes more to the conventions of police procedurals and film noir. Tom Weston-Jones stars as a tough Irish “copper” who is part Sherlock Holmes (a sleuth with a physician sidekick), part Philip Marlowe (a tarnished knight in a corrupt universe), and part Batman (an urban vigilante). Co-created by Tom Fontana (Homicide), the series delivers surprising plot twists and gritty details in its promising debut. Sunday, Aug. 19, at 10 p.m., BBC America
