Charity of the week: Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation
The foundation has raised more than $45 million to help cure childhood cancers.
In 2000, 4-year-old Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who had been suffering from a childhood cancer since before her 1st birthday, told her parents she wanted to start a lemonade stand to raise money for other children with cancer. She raised $2,000 in one day, and over the next four years, she made more than $1 million before dying at the age of 8. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (alexslemonade.org), founded by Alex’s parents in 2005, a year after her death, continues the effort Alex began. It has raised more than $45 million to help cure childhood cancers by funding more than 200 cutting-edge research projects. Its Travel Fund subsidizes lodgings, meals, and other travel expenses for families of children receiving cancer treatment around the country.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
