Charity of the week: International AIDS Vaccine Initiative
The goal of IAVI is to develop a vaccine against AIDS and HIV.
The mission of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (iavi.org) is the rapid development of an effective vaccine against AIDS and HIV. Coordinating the work of its in-house research laboratories with governments, private businesses, and universities on four continents, IAVI focuses on avenues of research that have previously been neglected in AIDS vaccine development initiatives. A study completed in 2009 in Thailand demonstrated the validity of the concept that a human vaccine can prevent HIV infection. IAVI and its partner research organization are now studying antibodies that can neutralize a large number of variants of the fast-mutating AIDS virus.
