Peter Jackson’s adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classics seem perfect for high-definition Blu-ray, said The Miami Herald. Though this set only offers the original theatrical cuts of the films, there’s enough “serious hi-def goodness” to keep fans satisfied.

This three-disc documentary offers a “definitive history of the civil-rights movement,” said USA Today. Narrated by social activist Julian Bond, the acclaimed PBS series earned six Emmys, a Peabody Award, and an Oscar nomination when it originally aired in 1987.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

(First Look, $29)

Director Werner Herzog lets Nicolas Cage get weird in this “gritty film noir,” said the Los Angeles Daily News. As a cop struggling with his inner demons, Cage gives one of his “strangest performances.” In fact the whole film is bizarre, but its “weirdness is like gumbo—spicy with a kick that’s hard to resist.”
