Disgraced lobbyist sentenced
Jack Abramoff, the Washington super-lobbyist who once boasted of his close ties to the Bush White House, was sentenced to 48 months in prison for his role in a wide-ranging corruption scandal. Prosecutors and defense attorneys requested a lighter sentence, citing Abramoff’s cooperation in several corruption cases. But U.S. District Court Judge Ellen Huvelle rebuffed those pleas, saying that Abramoff had “corrupted the political process.”

Seven years after the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. remains “dangerously vulnerable” to chemical, biological, and nuclear terrorism, according to new report from the bipartisan Partnership for a Secure America. The report said the U.S. had fallen behind in efforts to reduce access to nuclear technology and combat bioterrorism. The Bush administration disputed the bipartisan group’s conclusions.
