GOOD DAY FOR: Clearing the air, after China said it will shut down another 105 factories around Beijing, and maybe 117 more in neighboring areas, to battle high levels of air pollution before the upcoming Olympic Games. The government blamed “extreme” weather on the lingering pollution, which rose above 100 on the pollution index this week, and vowed other measures if the “extreme” pollution persists. (Bloomberg)
BAD DAY FOR: Maintaining the buzz, after coffee giant Starbucks reported its first quarterly loss, due to $168 million in costs related to closing 600 U.S. stores. The $6.7 million loss wasn’t quite as bad as expected, and Starbucks said it will close more stores than it will open next year. Its shares rose 4.4 percent in extended trading, after the report. (Bloomberg)
