Cheneys visitor logs.
The week's news at a glance.
Washington, D.C.
Vice President Dick Cheney went to great lengths to prevent disclosure of visitor logs at his official residence, legal records released last week show. A liberal government-watchdog group last year filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit seeking the identities of conservative religious leaders who visited Cheney’s residence on the grounds of the Naval Observatory. The Secret Service maintains the visitor logs, but late last year, a newly released letter shows, a lawyer for Cheney directed the Secret Service to turn over the records to Cheney’s office and not keep copies. Cheney contends that the visitor logs are presidential records that are exempt from the Freedom of Information Act. But the plaintiffs say that’s a matter for the court to decide.
