Rioting over Pinochet
The week's news at a glance.
Santiago, Chile
Chileans celebrating the death of former President Augusto Pinochet this week battled riot police and Pinochet supporters in the nation's capital. Shortly after the government announced Pinochet's death at 91, about 6,000 people, many drinking and dancing, filled the streets around Santiago's presidential palace. After trying to force their way onto the palace grounds, revelers tore traffic lights out of the pavement, burned cars and barricades, and fought with Pinochet supporters. Some demonstrators expressed regret that Pinochet did not live to face trial for human-rights violations. "Pinochet did not die an innocent man," said Hiram Villagra, the prosecutor in several cases against the former dictator. (See obituary, Page 46)
