Wave warnings
The week's news at a glance.
Seward, Alaska
The U.S. strengthened its defenses against killer waves this week, installing four new tsunami-warning buoys off the southern coast of Alaska. The high-tech buoys detect large waves as they move across the ocean, transmitting data to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists onshore. NOAA now has 19 buoys in its network, scattered around the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea. The agency aims to install 39 by 2008.
