Bin Laden clears Moussaoui
The week's news at a glance.
Somewhere in Pakistan?
In an audiotape released this week, Osama bin Laden said that Zacarias Moussaoui had nothing to do with the 9/11 terror attacks. Moussaoui, once considered the “20th hijacker,” was recently sentenced to life in prison in connection with the plot to fly airplanes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. “I am the one in charge of the 19 brothers, and I never assigned brother Zacarias to be with them in that mission,” bin Laden said. He said that if “brother Moussaoui” really knew anything about the plot, bin Laden would have called it off after Moussaoui was arrested two weeks before 9/11. U.S. officials said the message is apparently part of bin Laden’s continuing effort to demonstrate that he is still a force to be reckoned with.
