Yongon, Myanmar
The ruling junta in Myanmar this week deposed the prime minister and replaced him with a hard-line general. The move was a further blow to the ailing democracy movement of Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize winner who has been under house arrest since May. The ousted prime minister, Gen. Khin Nyunt, was no democrat, but he did at least broker talks between the junta and Suu Kyi’s organization. The U.S., which already has comprehensive sanctions against Myanmar, called on other Western nations to impose a full import ban. Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, has been under military rule since 1962.
