Battling militants
The week's news at a glance.
South Waziristan, Pakistan
Pakistani officials said they made significant headway against al Qaida this week, arresting key militant leaders in Karachi and destroying hideouts along the Afghan border. The arrested men include a nephew of former al Qaida No. 3 Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and a brother-in-law of Ramzi Yousef, the 1993 World Trade Center bomber. They were members of a cell said to be responsible for recent attacks on Shiites in Pakistan. In the counterterrorism operation, aimed at al Qaida and Taliban fugitives hiding near the Afghan border, Pakistani troops killed more than 50 militants. “It is a large blow against terrorism in Pakistan,” said Lt. Col. Tucker Mansager, a U.S. commander in Afghanistan.
