Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will not be indicted in the long-running bribery investigation that has been hanging over his government, Israeli prosecutors announced this week. The investigation stemmed from a transaction several years ago, when Sharon was foreign minister. An Israeli businessman who wanted to develop a Greek resort gave Sharon’s son, Gilad, hefty consulting fees, and Sharon was accused of using diplomatic influence to get the Greek government to support the project. A few months ago, Chief Prosecutor Edna Arbel recommended that Sharon be charged with corruption, but a subsequent investigation failed to turn up any evidence that either the prime minister or his son did anything wrong.
