The Ukrainian government has abruptly canceled most news broadcasts from outside the country. Last month it forced the largest station to drop broadcasts of U.S.-funded Radio Free Europe. The director of another radio station that was considering picking up Radio Free Europe died in a suspicious car accident. This week, when a smaller station began transmitting Radio Free Europe, the Voice of America, the BBC, and Germany’s Deutsche Welle, special forces stormed the studio and confiscated the transmitters. U.S. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said the “assault on democracy” was particularly serious because this was an election year for Ukraine and voters needed information.
