The week's news at a glance.
Jindrichovice pod Smrkem, Czech Republic
A Czech town has declared itself off-limits to federal government officials. Mayor Petr Pavek of Jindrichovice pod Smrkem said his city-hall workers were sick of wasting their time fetching forms and documents for state auditors and other officials visiting from Prague. So they have put up warning signs on all roads into the town. The signs feature a fat bureaucrat carrying a sheaf of papers, with a red slash running through him. Any government official who enters Jindrichovice pod Smrkem without an invitation faces a $350 fine—nearly a month’s pay.
