Davis fights back

Gov. Gray Davis this week asked the California Supreme Court to delay his Oct. 7 recall election until March. He also requested the right to run to replace himself if voters remove him from office. Election law prohibits listing Davis among the replacement candidates, but the Democratic governor’s supporters said that was unfair. Even if a majority of Californians vote to oust Davis, his lawyers said, he might still have more support than anyone else. Opponents said that was absurd. “If he is on the replacement list,” said Phil Paule of Rescue California Recall Gray Davis, “that gives him an opportunity to lose twice in the same election.” Some 200 people have expressed interest in running, and Hustler publisher Larry Flynt was among the first to announce his candidacy.
