Kandahar, Afghanistan
Fugitive Taliban leader Mullah Omar has named 10 of his former top deputies to lead resistance against the U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan, the Pakistani daily The News reported this week. Taliban spokesman Mohammed Mukhtar Mujahid told the paper that Omar called on his supporters to drive out foreign troops and bring down the government of Hamid Karzai, which Omar called a U.S. puppet. Afghan officials said they believed Omar and other Taliban officials had been hiding in neighboring Pakistan. The U.S. is moving some of the 11,000 international peacekeeping troops to the Pakistani border in an effort to block Taliban incursions.
