Student killed
The week's news at a glance.
New Orleans
Gunmen opened fire with an AK-47 assault rifle and two pistols in a high school gym class this week, killing a 15-year-old boy and wounding three teenage girls. Another girl was hurt when she was trampled by panicked classmates. “Bam, bam, bam,” one student said. “I knew what it was and I ran.” Three gunmen slipped past metal detectors and security guards, then entered the gym of John McDonogh High School in New Orleans. They picked Jonathan Williams, a football player nicknamed “Caveman,” out of 150 students and shot him repeatedly. Officers swept the neighborhood and arrested four teens. Police said the attack was likely payback for the murder of an 18-year-old a week earlier.
