Hindu families massacred
The week's news at a glance.
Kashmir
Eight gunmen descended on a mostly Muslim village in Kashmir this week and killed more than half of the few remaining Hindus. The unknown gunmen ordered Hindu families in Nadimarg to come out of their homes, and then shot all who complied. Weeping Muslim neighbors said 24 people, including 11 women and two children, were dead. The Hindu survivors now say they want to leave. “We want to go, save us!” they told visiting Indian officials. More than 100,000 Hindus fled the Kashmir valley a decade ago following attacks by Muslim militants. Around 10,000 remain in the area, which is controlled by India but also claimed by Pakistan.
