New Arab satellite TV
The week's news at a glance.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
An all-news, pan-Arab satellite television station began broadcasting this week, providing Arab viewers with an alternative to Al-Jazeera. The new station, Al-Arabiya, is based in Dubai and owned by Middle East News, a company linked to the Saudi royal family. Director Saleh Qalab, a former Jordanian information minister, said the station would have “nothing to do with any government at all,” unlike Al-Jazeera, which is financed by the government of Qatar. Qalab said that, with war on the horizon, he wanted to promote good reporting. “We are not going to incite people’s political instincts.”
