Poet’s voice found?

The week's news at a glance.

Granada, Spain

Curators of the Federico Garcia Lorca Museum are puzzled by a collector’s claim to have found the world’s only recordings of the famous poet’s voice. Roberto di Chiari of Argentina has offered to give the museum newly discovered wax cylinders and wire tapes that he says are recordings of Lorca’s Buenos Aires radio broadcasts, made three years before the poet was shot, in 1936, by Francisco Franco’s forces. But di Chiari will not let anyone listen to them. “Mr. Chiari is being mysterious, and hasn’t convinced us he really has the material,” said curator Juan de Loya. “He seems to be playing cat and mouse with us. It’s all very strange.”
