Poisoning seafood
The week's news at a glance.
Crofton, Md.
Biologists have recommended poisoning a 9-acre pond in Crofton, Md., to end an invasion by a voracious Chinese fish called the snakehead. A local man dumped a pair of snakeheads in the pond after they outgrew his aquarium. Scientists fear the snaggletoothed creatures, which can slither over the land in search of fresh prey, could devour fish in the pond, then move on to ravage other waterways. The snakeheads have already spawned more than 100 offspring. Federal officials have decided to outlaw importing snakeheads, which are considered a delicacy in China. A fish breeder in Singapore laughed at Maryland’s predicament. “The best way to get rid of them,” Koh Boon Haw said, “is to eat them.”
