Bad news for Britney
Britney Spears
Britney Spears’ run of bad luck continued on Monday as a California family court official gave her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, custody of their two boys, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1. Spears’ lawyer said the reason for the ruling was nothing gossip worthy—the pop star simply couldn’t provide a valid California driver’s license, and couldn’t prove she had taken a random drug and alcohol test. Spears applied for a driver’s license later in the day. Another hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
Spears was obviously devastated, said Hollie McKay on FOXNews.com’s Pop Tarts blog. As soon as she handed over the boys, she “boogied her way to a Bel-Air tanning salon,” and then she “hightailed it” to the Peninsula Hotel for a beverage. Britney was “totally emotionless,” but Federline was reportedly ecstatic. Skeptics say the unemployed K-Fed—Spears’ former backup dancer—“went after the kids simply because he was wanted a big bite of Brit’s bursting bank balance, could it be possible he just wants the best for his baby boys?”
No matter what motivated Federline, said Andrew Blankstein in the Los Angeles Times (free registration), it’s clear that the court has “had enough” of Spears’ antics. In two years of motherhood, there have been tabloid stories about a baby falling out of a high-chair, and about Spears tooling down the Pacific Coast Highway with a baby in her lap instead of a car seat. There have been “trips to drug rehab and bouts of bizarre behavior that were caught on tape.”

Don’t be fooled by Britney’s unemotional reaction to this latest blow, said Matt Donnelly on E! Online’s The Hum blog. Dr. Drew Pinsky, host of radio call-in show Loveline, says losing custody of the kids could make Britney suicidal. “We can only hope those around Britney realize the seriousness of this situation. Mom? Dad? Little Jamie Lynn? Someone please help this girl.”
