A Samsung subsidiary designed a fire extinguisher that doubles as a flower vase, said David Grossman at Popular Mechanics. The "firevase" looks like a normal decorative flower holder made out of red-tinted glass that's easy to grab in an emergency. But tossing it toward a fire shatters the vase "to release a stash of potassium carbonate," a dry flame retardant, that is kept discreetly sealed in an outer chamber.
Once released, the colorless chemical "quickly works to suppress nearby fire." The attractive fire extinguisher is particularly suited to Samsung's home country, South Korea, where every home is required by law to have a fire extinguisher. Samsung is "currently distributing 200,000 of the vases to members of its insurance program."
