1. Labour to back Osborne’s fiscal charter

Labour will back George Osborne’s new fiscal charter, the shadow chancellor will announce. John McDonnell has stated that Britain must always live within its means. “We accept we are going to have to live within our means and we always will do – full stop,” McDonnell said ahead of the Labour conference, which opens in Brighton on Sunday. He added: “We are not deficit deniers.”

2. Sepp Blatter facing criminal proceedings

Police have opened criminal proceedings against FIFA president Sepp Blatter over corruption allegations. The notorious official is accused of "criminal mismanagement or misappropriation", the Swiss attorney general revealed. Blatter has been interviewed by Swiss police, and his office was searched and data seized.

3. EU tried to warn on emissions in 2013

EU officials tried to warn European leaders in 2013 that a device fitted to VW diesel engines could skew emissions data, says the Financial Times. Regulators failed to pursue the issue, the report claims, even though such test-altering devices had been illegal in the EU since 2007. Meanwhile, the Daily Mail says that up to 1.5m VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda cars face recall in the UK.

4. Are Ukip in another civil war?

Ukip are in civil war, claim some reports this morning, after Nigel Farage accused the party’s only MP of having “residual loyalty to his old friends in the Tory party”. Douglas Carswell walked out of the party’s conference after a disagreement with the Ukip leader over which party’s anti-EU campaign Ukip should back.

5. Yvette Cooper to warn on internet bullies

Yvette Cooper is to argue that terrifying levels of sexist abuse risk putting a generation of women off politics. Speaking at the party conference, the former shadow home secretary will say the party’s recent leadership election campaign was beset by “bullying and misogynistic” attacks that undermined Labour’s commitment to equality.

6. Murder victim is alive 31 years on

A supposed murder victim has turned up safe and well 31 years after vanishing off the face of the earth. Petra Pazsitka, from the German city of Braunschweig, was 24 when last seen in 1980. A man later confessed to murdering her. However, she is now 55 and living as Mrs Schneider in Düsseldorf. Her identity was discovered when her home was burgled and she called police.

7. England face Wales in crunch World Cup clash

The biggest match of the Rugby World Cup so far takes place at Twickenham this evening as the hosts England face their bitter rivals Wales. It is a match that neither side can afford to lose, as only one of the two countries is likely to emerge from the 'pool of death' which also features the mighty Aussies. Owen Farrell, Sam Burgess and Brad Barritt will form a new-look midfield.

8. Teenager kills himself after Wonga clear-out

A disabled teenager killed himself after the notorious payday loans company Wonga cleared out his bank account. Kane Sparham-Price, 18, from Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, had “numerous problems including those connected with his mental health” and spent much of his life in foster care and care homes, an inquest was told.

9. Did Sam Smith copy Michael Jackson?

Reaction to Sam Smith’s James Bond theme Writing’s On The Wall continues. Some are claiming that he “ripped off Michael Jackson” for the song. Tweeters slammed the song for the new Bond Movie, with some claiming it bears an uncanny likeness to Jackson’s iconic 1995 hit Earth Song. Smith is the first solo male British artist to record a Bond theme since Tom Jones in 1964.

10. Jose Mourinho slams Wenger – again

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has seemingly continued his spat with Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger, accusing the Gunners boss of being "the king" who is "not under pressure". Chelsea are at Newcastle today for the tea-time kick-off, while Arsenal travel to this season’s surprise package Leicester City, with a 3pm kick-off.
