1. Government tries to bury £2bn NHS crisis report

Ministers have buried statistics that show the NHS is hurtling towards an unprecedented £2bn deficit, say top NHS officials. A senior figure at the health service regulator Monitor said his organisation had been “leaned on” by the government to delay its report in order to avoid it overshadowing the forthcoming Tory party conference.

2. Guantanamo torture 'paved way for Iraq invasion'

The last Briton held in Guantanamo Bay says he is still being abused by his captors despite his imminent release. Shaker Aamer also gives an eyewitness account of the torture of a detainee whose false confession paved the way for the invasion of Iraq. David Davis MP says the news “massively strengthened” the case for an independent inquiry into Britain's alleged involvement in torture.

3. Humiliated England crash out of World Cup

England are out of the Rugby World Cup after being demolished by a rampant Australia at Twickenham. This is the first time a host nation has crashed out in the group stage of the tournament. The result also means both Australia and Wales are into the quarter-finals. England coach Stuart Lancaster said he would consider resigning.

4. Lord Healey dies at age of 98

Former Labour chancellor Lord Denis Healey has died at the age of 98. His family says he passed away in his sleep on Saturday morning at his Sussex home. Lord Healey was often described as "the best prime minister we never had". He was in number 11 Downing Street between 1974 and 1979, and had to contend with the economic consequences of a five-fold increase in oil prices in 1973 to 1974.

5. Israelis killed in Jerusalem knife attack

Two Israelis were killed and two others injured in a knife attack in Jerusalem. Police shot dead the attacker, who they say was a Palestinian. The victims are said to be from an ultra-Orthodox Jewish family who were walking to pray at the Western Wall. The incident comes two days after an Israeli couple were shot dead in the West Bank.

6. 53% of teachers want to quit profession

More than half of teachers in England are thinking of quitting in the next two years, new research has suggested. The survey, conducted by the National Union of Teachers, found that 53% want to quit, and that 61% of those blamed workload, with 57% desiring a better work/life balance. Schools minister Nick Gibb has pledged to tackle excessive workloads.

7. Two dead after bus crashes into supermarket

Two people, including an eight-year-old boy, died after a bus crashed into a supermarket in Coventry. The double-decker Stagecoach bus hit a number of stationary cars and a lamppost before crashing into a Sainsbury's store in the city centre around 6pm. West Midlands Ambulance Service said six people were taken to hospital.

8. Cameron to ‘beef up’ SAS to take on ISIS

David Cameron says he will “beef up” the SAS to take the fight to ISIS. Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, the PM says the government will buy 20 new drones that can target ISIS extremists in Syria and Iraq. He says he wants to push ahead with a parliamentary vote on British air strikes in Syria and insists that Russian involvement should not prevent this country taking part.

9. Cyber bully pleads guilty to MP rape threat

A 38-year-old man who threatened to rape and kill a Labour MP in a Facebook message has pleaded guilty to breaking the Malicious Communications Act. Daniel Labacik sent the message to the “Paula Sherriff fighting for Dewsbury” Facebook page in June. Sherriff tells the Independent on Sunday that the plea will “send a message” to online bullies.

10. Mourinho meltdown as Chelsea lose again

Jose Mourinho greeted his side’s 3-1 defeat to Southampton with an extraordinary outburst on Sky Sports. "I want to make it clear. One, I don't run away," said the Blues boss. "Two, if the club want to sack me they have to sack me because I am not running away from my responsibilities or my team." Chelsea are 16th in the table, 10 points behind leaders Manchester City,
