Premier League transfer news: Raphael Varane, Eden Hazard, Harry Maguire
Man Utd in failed £100m bid to sign World Cup winner Varane from Real Madrid
Premier League transfer news and rumours
United wanted Varane
Manchester United’s search for a centre-back took them from Leicester and London to Munich and Madrid.
The Red Devils were linked with Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Diego Godin during the transfer window - but the most surprising news to emerge after deadline day is of their interest in Real Madrid star Raphael Varane.

The Sun reports that United were prepared to spend £100m on the World Cup-winning Frenchman, but Real were not willing to part with him. The 25-year-old also starred in Real’s Champions League victory last season.
The Daily Telegraph adds that United was only willing to sign a world-class defender, such as Varane, but refused to bring in a “lesser” player, despite the demands of boss Jose Mourinho.
Maguire for £15m?
Over recent weeks Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for Leicester and England defender Harry Maguire. However, it’s reported today that they could have signed him last summer for just £15m. (The Daily Telegraph)
Eden Hazard: Chelsea to Real Madrid
The Premier League transfer window may now be closed, but that’s not the case in Spain. The window is still open for most European nations until 31 August, which means Premier League players can still be sold. One player linked with a move away before the end of the month is Chelsea’s Eden Hazard. The Blues have already sold Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid and the goalkeeper is keen for fellow Belgian Hazard to join him at the Bernabeu. (The Guardian)
Reds eye January sales
Liverpool are being tipped to make moves for Nabil Fekir, Domagoj Vida and Christian Pulisic during the next transfer window, in January. (Daily Express)
Danny Rose: Tottenham to Paris Saint-Germain
England left-back Danny Rose is “holding out” for a loan move to French giants PSG. Spurs have told the defender that he can leave and he had been linked with German side Schalke. (The Sun)
Dembele not for sale
Ousmane Dembele was linked with Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, but Barcelona don’t want to sell the forward. The 21-year-old French star and World Cup winner signed for Barca from Borussia Dortmund last year. (ESPN)
Ings thanks Reds fans
Striker Danny Ings has paid tribute to Liverpool fans, after securing a deadline day move to Southampton. Ings leaves Anfield on a season-long loan that will be made permanent next summer. In a post on Instagram, he wrote: “I want to thank everybody at @liverpoolfc for welcoming me into the family and being there for me through the tough and the good times, I wish you all the success in the future and I’ll miss you all. YNWA.”
Why Rojo deal failed
Everton’s attempts to sign Marcos Rojo fell through after Manchester United failed to sign a replacement defender. Everton ended up signing Yerry Mina from Barcelona and could also still land Kurt Zouma on loan from Chelsea. (Daily Mail)
