The Sun reports that United were prepared to spend £100m on the World Cup-winning Frenchman, but Real were not willing to part with him. The 25-year-old also starred in Real’s Champions League victory last season.

The Daily Telegraph adds that United was only willing to sign a world-class defender, such as Varane, but refused to bring in a “lesser” player, despite the demands of boss Jose Mourinho.

The Premier League transfer window may now be closed, but that’s not the case in Spain. The window is still open for most European nations until 31 August, which means Premier League players can still be sold. One player linked with a move away before the end of the month is Chelsea’s Eden Hazard. The Blues have already sold Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid and the goalkeeper is keen for fellow Belgian Hazard to join him at the Bernabeu. (The Guardian)

Ings thanks Reds fans

Striker Danny Ings has paid tribute to Liverpool fans, after securing a deadline day move to Southampton. Ings leaves Anfield on a season-long loan that will be made permanent next summer. In a post on Instagram, he wrote: “I want to thank everybody at @liverpoolfc for welcoming me into the family and being there for me through the tough and the good times, I wish you all the success in the future and I’ll miss you all.
